The Chick Hatched!

The chick hatched! Boy - did he work hard! He is very tired and right now you can see him on the webcam (see the Egg-cam entry below a few posts). He does move around a lot, so he may be out of view from the camera.

Update - Hoping . . .

Sad news & good news . . .

The sad news it that the chick that pipped yesterday didn't make it. He was just too weak to break all the way through the egg. The membrane under the shell was too tough for him to get through so that he could breathe.

Remember - if we try to help a chick hatch, it won't develop its muscles all the way so that it can survive after the hatch. I'm sad, too. :(

The good news is that another egg is peeping a lot today AND it is moving. It made a tiny crack - but no hole so far. This can take a while. I need to leave the incubator shut so that the humidity level can stay at the right point. (I did open it just enough to get the sad egg out and put a wet paper towel in so that the incubator could keep its humidity!)

So . . . . you know what I did? I prayed ~ I've grown quite attached to these little eggs and so hope that at least one can hatch! I don't know what's going to happen, but it never hurts to ask for God's help!

Action!

Hi! It's Mrs. Shields! I went to check on the eggs this morning and the little speckled egg was pipping (it was starting to crack the shell) and had about an inch long place all the way pipped. It must have been sleeping because I didn't hear anything.

I went back a couple hours later and saw that a large crack had come out from the spot that was pipped. I hope we have a baby chick soon!

Day 21

"Happy Birthday to You!" It's time for the baby chicks to begin cracking out their shells. It takes them a few hours to crack themselves out of the tough shells.

Day 20

This little chick has had a HARD day. It has been trying its hardest to break through its hard shell. That sounds pretty tough for a little guy like it! The little chick's belly button is starting to form today. How funny! Imagine what a chick's belly button looks like!

Day 19

Ever wonder what a chick looks like when its almost fully developed in the egg?

On day 19 the yolk begins to enter the chicks body.

And then there are only two days left.

Day 18 - Chick Development Stages

Hey Kids!

Do YOU know what's happening on Day 18?

First, the Lungs begin to function. The Lungs help you breathe. If you cannot breathe, the chick cannot live. First, the chick's Beak pecks through the inner layer of the egg! This helps the lungs work better.

Fun Fact:

Did you know? By Day 18, a chick's fuzz is developed? The fuzz keeps the chick nice and warm!

EGG-cam!

Here is a video we recorded with the webcam. As you can see, nothing is happening yet! We are still trying to get the live feed going on the blog . . . . no worries - since we won't see any hatching action until Thursday!

Day 17

Okay so on day 17 the chicky turns its beak towards the air sac in order to breath. Cool huh?

What would you be doing on day 16 if you were a chick inside an egg?


Answer: your scales, claws and beak are becoming firm and bony.

If you're looking for action, day 16 would not be the day to find it, it's just an egg sitting in the incubator.

Day 15

Hey kids, did you know that the chicken eggs are 15 days old now !!! This is what the inside of the egg looks like right now, isn't that cool!

Day 14

Wanna know what happens to the egg on day 14?

On day 14 the skull becomes to harden into a bone.

The baby chick will turn its head to the rounder side of the egg.

Day 13

What does a chick look like in its egg on Day 13?

Well here is a picture of it on the left! Isn't it weird how the chicken can grow from that to be a chick?!?! They aren't cute for awhile after they hatch.

Day 12

Hey guys, today the ribs that protect the heart will start to form, isn't theat cool!!! Also, the little scales will start to appear on their legs so they can walk! The chick also likes to move around right now. So thats what is happening now. Bye!

Day 11

When does a beak get hard?

On day 11 the beak of a chicken gets firm and ready to break out of the egg. There claws curve down and sharpen up.

Day 10

Hey everyone! Do you want to know what happens on day 10?

• That baby chick is starting to grow its own.
  
• Claws begin to form.
  
• The comb is visible.
  
• Flight feathers appear.
  
• Feather tracts appear over the sternum.
  
• Lower eyelids develop.

Day 9

Hi kids! Do you like your knee caps? On day 9 of the chick growing inside the egg, its knee caps begin to form!

Day 8

Hi kids! Did you know that chicks have eyelids? Well, on day 8, the chick's eyelids begin to form inside the egg!

Day 7

1. A lot of stuff happens on day 7 of the growth of an egg. Feathers start to appear on the tail, the legs, the eye starts to form, and the leg starts to bend.

Day 6

How big do you think the chicks are inside the eggs? Hey kids, the chicks in the eggs are still developing. The brain and the body are growing to be good strong chickens and have a good life one day when they get big like you.

Day 5

What came first: the egg or the chicken?

On day five, the bones and the reproductive organs begin to form.

Day 4

This is Day 4 of our eggs' growth. On this of development the chick weighs .05 grams. But soon it will begin to grow very fast, JUST LIKE YOU!!! When you were in your mommy's tummy we knew what you looked like. On the 4th day we can see how the chicken's body beginning to form.

Day 2

Every chicken has a heart, right? Well at the beginning of day 2, the heart begins to form in the chicken. Awhile later, the ears form. Then, at the very end of the day, the heat starts beating.
